A closer look at iDogNames Side-by-Side Name Compare

A free comparison table for two to four dog names. It pulls meaning and origin notes from the iDogNames directory, flags names that sound like common commands, and plays each name with your browser's voice.

The last step in picking a name

Name lists help you find more options. This iDogNames tool helps you drop some. You type in two to four finalists and see them in one table, with whatever the directory knows about each: meaning, origin, pronunciation and gender labels. The page notes those entries may be missing or need checking against a specialist source.

Hearing it before you commit

Two checks make it practical. The first compares each name against cue words your dog will hear every day. The tool uses a short list of documented sound-alike pairs based on AKC guidance, such as Kit and sit, Moe or Joe and no, and Shay and stay, and you can add your own household cues to note anything else that sounds close. The page is upfront that this list can't detect every similar sound or predict how a dog will react.

The second check is simply saying it. Play buttons read each name aloud using your browser's voice, which varies by device, so you can hear how it sounds called across a yard rather than read on a screen.

Part of a larger free directory

The compare tool sits inside iDogNames, a free directory of more than 11,000 dog names with other tools such as a name tournament and a random generator. If you're still at the brainstorming stage, start there. If you're down to a few favorites and a family that can't agree, this table and a shared link may settle it faster.
