A closer look at SciFig
SciFig is a web workspace for making figures for papers and talks. It has three tools: illustrations generated from text or reference material, data charts built from uploaded tables, and flowcharts, with editable SVG exports for charts and flowcharts. A free plan gives 150 credits on the first day plus daily check-in credits. Sketch, photo, reference and PDF inputs need a paid plan.
Three kinds of figure
A methods section might need a schematic of an experimental setup, a chart of results and a flowchart of the sample pipeline. SciFig treats those as three separate tools. Illustration generates a scientific drawing from a description, and paid plans add inputs like a rough sketch, a PDF page or a reference figure. DataChart starts from your table and plots it, and FlowChart lays out steps and decisions.
The split matters most at export. Charts and flowcharts come out as editable SVG, so you can fix a label or change a color in a vector editor instead of generating the figure again. Illustrations are generated images from models such as GPT Image 2 and Nano Banana, which makes them quicker to produce but harder to correct by hand.
How your data is handled
Research content is often unpublished, so the privacy policy is worth reading here. It says the content needed for a drawing request goes to third-party AI providers. For charts, the AI planning step sees only a limited preview of your data, while the original table is processed on SciFig's own servers for the calculations and plotting. The policy also says prompts, uploads and generated figures aren't used to train any model, on any plan. Stripe handles payments and Cloudflare hosts the service and stores files.
Credits and plans
Everything runs on credits. A new free account gets 100 welcome credits and 50 more for checking in on the first day, then daily check-in credits of up to 150 with a streak. The free plan covers text-based illustrations, data charts and flowcharts, while sketch, photo, reference and PDF inputs need a paid plan. Paid plans are advertised from $8.33 a month, and paid credits don't expire. An education discount exists alongside the regular plans.
