A closer look at TextDet
TextDet is an Android OCR app that reads text from photos, scans, screenshots and PDF pages on the phone, offline. Edit and search results, tap links and numbers, and export TXT or Markdown, with no ads, account or daily limit. Pro adds multi-page PDFs, Word and CSV exports and translation for $3.99 a month or $29.99 once.
Text from a photo, without the upload
TextDet does its reading on the phone. Its Android page says images and the text read from them never leave the device, because both recognition engines run locally: Google ML Kit for five scripts (Latin, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Devanagari) and PP-OCR models published on the same site. That makes it a sensible choice for receipts, letters or anything else you'd rather not hand to a cloud service, and it works with no signal.
Getting an image in is flexible. There's a document scanner with automatic edge detection, a camera mode with manual cropping, a gallery picker for up to 20 images at once, paste, share-to-app from anywhere, and import of a single PDF page.
Fixing and using the result
OCR is never perfect, so the editing tools matter. You can change any word, and tap the boxes around detected lines to drop junk or bring a line back. Links, email addresses and phone numbers in the text turn into buttons. Every scan goes into a library on the phone that you can search and tag. Export is TXT or Markdown in the free version, and there's an offline read-aloud option. Launcher shortcuts and a Quick Settings tile get you to a scan quickly.
Free and Pro
The free app has no ads, no account and no daily limit, and the site says those features stay free. TextDet Pro is for longer and more structured work. It adds multi-page documents, import of a whole PDF, searchable PDF, Word and CSV exports, saving to a folder, receipt line items and tables to CSV, and on-device translation between 59 languages. It costs $3.99 a month, $19.99 a year with a seven-day free trial, or $29.99 once, and prices vary by country.
TextDet is built by NornWorks LLC. Version 1.1 is on Google Play. The wider textdet.com site also hosts a browser demo for scene text detection, plus the models, datasets and benchmarks behind it.
