A closer look at Web Harmonium

Web Harmonium is a browser-based Indian harmonium for singers, students and devotional musicians. Each key shows both its Western pitch and its Sargam syllable, and you can play with a mouse, touchscreen, laptop keyboard or MIDI controller. It includes raga guides, song notes, a web tanpura, a tuner and local recording. The tools share a 10-minute trial, and lifetime access is $4.99 once.

Two names on every key

A beginner learning a bhajan from Sargam notation and a keyboard player who reads C-D-E are looking at the same notes under different names. Web Harmonium prints both on every key, so each Western pitch sits next to its Sargam syllable, with Sa set to C3 by default. Transpose and octave controls move Sa to wherever suits your voice.

You can play by clicking or tapping, but the laptop keyboard mapping is the practical choice for longer practice, and a MIDI controller works too. The sound is a harmonium sample played through the browser's Web Audio API, and the first tap unlocks it.

Practice tools around the keyboard

The extras are aimed at practice. A web tanpura gives you a drone to sing against, and a tuner listens through your microphone to check pitch. Guides walk through ragas such as Yaman, Bhairav, Kafi and Malkauns, starting from Sa and building phrases, and song pages give notes for bhajans, Bollywood songs and ghazals. A recorder captures what you play, and a streak counter tracks daily practice.

Trial, price and privacy

All the tools share a single 10-minute trial with no account needed. After that, lifetime access costs $4.99 once, and you can sign in to restore a purchase. The reading content, such as guides and song notes, stays free.

The privacy policy is specific. Recordings, presets, streaks and settings are stored in your browser rather than on a server, the tuner processes microphone audio on your device, and MIDI input is read locally. The policy also covers the advertising shown on the site.
