Project overview

The short version

Read the full Project Note

NativeLingo is a Chrome extension and web app for picking up vocabulary while you read things you'd read anyway, from Reddit to the news to a recipe. After an optional three-minute level test, it swaps a few words on each page into Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish or English, matching plurals and verb tenses to the sentence, and you hover a word to see the original and hear it. The same swaps work in YouTube subtitles, with Netflix in beta. Word swaps are free for one language, along with a news feed of three articles a day and one book of your own. Pro, listed at $6.99 a month billed yearly, adds the spaced-repetition review, where you type each word back instead of tapping that you knew it. The privacy policy says page text, titles and addresses stay in your browser, translations come from a downloaded dictionary rather than an AI model, and only the words you were shown are sent to its server.
