A closer look at CheckersCafe

A native desktop checkers and draughts game for macOS and Windows, with five AI levels, 2D and 3D boards, and local hot-seat play.

Two rule sets, five opponents

The game opens on an 8x8 board against the Casual level, with you playing red. Switch to 10x10 and the rules change with it: men capture backwards, kings fly the length of a diagonal, and you must take the longest available chain. The five levels are meant to feel different. Rookie ignores danger and gives pieces away, while Master searches deep and counts exchanges out to the end. The page says each level was tested against the one below over 24 full games and won its series.

Captures are compulsory, and the app makes that visible. It offers only legal moves, marks the landing squares, rings the pieces that would be removed and plays a multi-jump one hop at a time. Take back returns your move and the computer's reply together, clicking any move in the list rewinds to that point, and the strongest level can suggest a move when you're stuck.

Boards and records

The flat board is quick to read, and the 3D board can be orbited, zoomed and tilted, with pieces that arc over the ones they take. Moves are recorded in standard numbered-square notation, wins, draws and losses are tallied per level, and the window follows your light or dark theme. Two players can share one computer in hot-seat mode, and in 3D a Flip button turns the camera to the other side.

How you get it

Unlike ChessCafe from the same storefront, CheckersCafe isn't free and isn't sold separately. It comes with a getapps.cafe membership: Solo Cup at $3.99 a month for one device or Family Roast at $7.99 for up to five, or $1.99 and $3.99 a month paid annually, with a 7-day trial. You sign in once on each device, which uses a licence slot, and after that the game runs on your own computer and works offline.
