A closer look at ChessCafe

A free offline 3D chess game for macOS and Windows. Play the computer at three strengths or pass the board between two local players.

A board that acts out the captures

ChessCafe's pitch is spectacle. Pieces don't slide. When you take one, your figure walks across at the pace of its rank and lands a blow, and the queen throws fire down the line without leaving her square. There are three armies to mix per side and seven battlegrounds with their own lighting and music. One key switches to a flat overhead view when the figures get in the way of thinking.

Underneath, it plays full chess, with castling, en passant, promotion, optional clocks, take-backs and a move record you can copy as PGN. The engine has three levels, from Squire to Warlord, and runs on its own thread so the board doesn't stutter while it thinks. Hotseat mode can swing the camera so each player faces their own side.

Where it comes from

The game page is upfront about its origins. The core game is King's Gambit, an open-source medieval 3D chess project used under the MIT licence, and the armies, voices and music were made for that project and ship unchanged. ChessCafe adds native Mac and Windows builds, the Mac menu bar and bundled assets, so the game loads from your own disk and keeps working with the network off.

Getting it

ChessCafe is free, with no subscription or activation. You sign in to getapps.cafe once to download it, and the page says the game needs no account after that and sends nothing you play anywhere. getapps.cafe is a storefront that also sells other desktop apps from the same publisher, some for a one-time price, and runs a separate subscription with a seven-day trial that ChessCafe doesn't require.
