A closer look at Jazz Café: Store BGM

Jazz Café is an iPhone music app with continuous shuffle, looping jazz and day and night pixel-art café scenes. No account is required, and it is free with in-app purchases. Optional Store Plus expands the library, removes ads and enables background playback and Lock Screen controls after an online check. Free tracks do not play in the background.

What it does

Jazz Café, from STS WORKS, is a single-purpose iPhone app. You open it, jazz starts playing, and continuous shuffle keeps it going until you stop it. The screen shows a pixel-art café that switches between day and night. There's no account to set up. Saved Simple tracks and the always-free Pro track play offline, and you can switch continuous playback off if you'd rather hear one track at a time.

The library comes in two collections. Simple is the original set, and Pro is ten newer tenor jazz tracks, including one always-free track and a free track that rotates monthly. New users get every Simple track free for their first seven days, and a free rotation stays available after that.

Playing it in a shop

The license is what sets this apart from a generic focus-music app. The terms allow playing the app's audio as background music inside a physical place you operate, such as a café, restaurant, bar, salon, retail shop, studio, clinic, office or waiting room. That applies to the free version as well as the paid plan, and covers ordinary ambient playback at one location from one active device at a time. It doesn't cover recording the audio, putting it in videos, ads, podcasts or livestreams, or using it as the main attraction at a ticketed event or DJ set.

For a small business that wants quiet music without working through a streaming service's business terms, that's a clear written answer. The terms don't mention music licensing societies, so owners in places where those apply should check local rules too.

The paid plan and data

Store Plus removes visual ads, opens the full café library, and turns on background playback and Lock Screen controls. Those features, and Pro tracks beyond the free ones, need a periodic online check. Free tracks stop when the app goes to the background, so a phone playing them has to stay on the app. The App Store privacy label says purchases, location, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics may be used to track you across other companies' apps and websites, which is worth knowing before you leave the free version running all day.
