A closer look at Lang Study
Lang Study helps beginners learn to write Chinese characters. Watch the stroke order, trace a character on screen, save the strokes you missed, then print a worksheet with the same set for slow handwriting practice. The first 50 HSK1 characters are free, with progress stored in your browser. A paid plan at $6.99 a month adds reusable worksheets, review history and custom lists.
Screen first, then paper
Apps that teach Chinese characters often stop at tracing on glass. Lang Study treats the screen as the warm-up and paper as the real practice. For each character you watch the stroke order, trace it once, and any strokes you miss go into a review queue. Then you print the same characters on a worksheet and write them slowly by hand.
The starter loop uses six simple characters, 人 for person, 口 for mouth, 日 for sun, 月 for moon, 山 for mountain and 水 for water, few enough to finish in one sitting. The site suggests circling the hardest one on paper so the next session starts there.
Plans for learners, parents and tutors
Before you start, you choose who the session is for and how long it should take. Self-study, parent coaching and teacher handoff each change the worksheet notes, and 10, 15 or 20 minutes sets how many characters to aim for. The result is a copy-ready plan listing the characters, the session length, a success check and links to the online practice and the printable worksheet, ready to paste into a message to a parent or student.
After the starter six, a free path continues through 50 HSK1 characters, from the first level of the standard Chinese proficiency test, combining tracing, missed-stroke review and paper writing into a weekly routine.
Free tier and paid plan
Free practice needs no account or checkout, and progress stays in your browser's storage on that device, so it won't follow you to another computer. A paid plan at $6.99 a month adds reusable worksheets, review history and custom character lists. The privacy policy separates browser-local records from account data and lists the kinds of providers it uses for payment, email, storage, analytics and sign-in. It also says Lang Study isn't directed at children under 13, who should practice with a parent, teacher or guardian rather than create their own account.
