A closer look at Merit Data
Merit Data collects and labels real-world training data for robotics and physical AI teams, including egocentric and wrist-camera video, UMI gripper demonstrations, teleoperation and failure-recovery episodes. Work starts with samples and a pilot, priced by quote.
What it does
Merit Data is a service, not software. A robotics team tells it what behavior it wants a model to learn, and Merit Data either matches existing recordings or sets up a custom collection. The menu is specific to manipulation work. It covers first-person demonstrations from head cameras, paired head and wrist views that keep both the scene and the close-up hand contact, UMI and gripper demonstrations for imitation learning, and teleoperated robot episodes with synchronized observations, actions and robot state.
The most interesting line item is failure data. Merit Data offers to record slips, misalignments and human corrections on purpose, because those are the episodes that expose where a policy is weak. Deliveries come with labels, metadata and manifests rather than raw video alone.
How an engagement runs
The site pushes a pilot-first approach. You review public sample previews, agree written acceptance criteria and run a pilot before committing to volume. Prices aren't listed, and every project is quoted. The company says it works mainly with US teams and supports projects in Europe and Asia-Pacific.
Consent and data rights
For a dataset built from people recording their own hands and surroundings, provenance matters. The security page says each release links back to consent, batch, delivery and deletion records, that contributor checks cover identity, age, eligibility and location, and that contributors are told how the footage will be used and how to withdraw consent. The website privacy policy, last updated July 8, 2026, names International Studyland Limited as the operator and notes it is still pending legal review, with project data governed by each signed agreement.
