Project Note

A closer look at MotifDeck

MotifDeck generates 2D game characters, props and scenes with AI, then turns a character into frame-by-frame animation you can trim and retime. Free accounts get 50 credits and previews; downloads need a paid plan from $19 a month.

Keeping one character consistent

Using AI art in a game means producing the same character over and over, in a run cycle, a dodge and a hit reaction, with the same face, outfit and weapon. MotifDeck is built around that problem. A project holds your character reference, and an assistant called Moti plans the work, from new outfits and expressions to enemies, props and a background that match. You see the plan and a credit quote before anything is generated.

Styles include pixel art, cartoon, anime, hand-painted, flat 2D and a 3D look. The site is clear that the 3D look still produces 2D images, not models or playable scenes.

Video first, frames after

Animation is where MotifDeck differs from a basic sprite generator. It creates a continuous video of the move, then extracts frames from it, so hair and a cape trail the motion instead of snapping between poses. The homepage demo samples one 73-frame, 3-second action at 8, 16, 32 and 64 frames, and the advice is sensible. Short loops like an idle can work with 8 to 16 frames, while a turning airborne slash keeps more of its follow-through at 32 or more.

You aren't stuck with the default pick. The editor shows every source frame, lets you add or remove individual ones, change their order and timing, and nudge position and size so the character doesn't drift. Free, Starter and Creator plans can select up to 16 frames, and Pro and Studio up to 64.

Tools and pricing

Alongside generation there are utilities for game art you already have, including a sprite sheet editor and splitter, sprite recolor, background removal, video to sprite sheet, sprite sheet to GIF and integer pixel art resizing.

The free plan comes with 50 one-time credits that don't expire and lets you preview results, but downloading generated files requires a paid unlock. Starter is $19 a month, Creator $39, Pro $79 and Studio $159, with 25% off on annual billing. Every task shows its exact cost before you confirm. The privacy page says uploads and outputs stay private by default and that AI services receive the prompts and references needed for each request, so don't upload art you don't have the rights to use.
