A closer look at Sage
An open-source framework and desktop app for building agents with MCP tools, native interactive replies and validated PPTX export.
Agent replies with controls you can use
Sage puts small interactive tools inside an agent conversation. Desktop 2.1.0 uses 31 native component types to render a supported OpenUI subset. A reply can be a chart, table or form. Inputs and calculated values can update locally without another model request. An explicit submission button hands the chosen values back to the assistant for the next turn.
The surrounding framework defines agents through packages of instructions, reusable skills and tools, including MCP services. The same runtime has desktop, server and Python entry points. Developers can reuse an agent package across those entry points.
Slides that remain editable
Presentations stream into 16:9 slide previews with thumbnails and navigation. Once a deck passes validation, Sage can export text, tables and charts as editable PowerPoint objects. That is a useful handoff when you expect to change copy or chart data after leaving the chat.
The 2.1.0 release doesn't import PPTX files or offer freeform slide editing, animation, images or video in slides. The documentation also warns that Office chart typography and Sage's preview may differ. Invalid final output stays read-only and doesn't enable export.
Bring a model and check the packages
The code is MIT-licensed. Desktop packages are available for macOS, Windows and Linux, with Python and the backend bundled. Linux still needs GTK and bubblewrap. Model providers may charge for requests. The macOS packages use ad-hoc signing without notarization, and Windows installers aren't code-signed.
The maintainer disclosed AI assistance in the submission. This first look draws on the public repository and 2.1.0 release documentation. The desktop app and live provider compatibility weren't independently tested for this note.
