A closer look at State & Strain Business & License Search

State & Strain lets you search cannabis business and license records by business name, DBA or license number, filtered by state, license type and status. Each match keeps its source and the date it was read. The site also covers state legality, lab results, strains and brands, and sells no cannabis. It's for adults 21 and older, and browsing is free.

Who holds a license

Cannabis licenses are public, but the records are spread across state, federal and city registries in different formats. State & Strain pulls them into one search. Enter a business name, a DBA or a license number, filter by state, license type and status, and you get matching records with their source and read date attached.

The site is careful about what a match means. It shows what the source said when it was read, not proof of where a business stands today, and it advises checking with the issuing authority before relying on a record. Its own sample brief makes the same point with numbers. On October 20, 2026 it held 8,939 New York records, 4,892 of them with an active status and 6,815 distinct business names, so a record count isn't the same as a count of businesses.

The rest of the site

Beyond records, a States Where Weed Is Legal page, updated October 7, 2026, counts 25 of 51 jurisdictions allowing adult use and gives each state's possession limits, penalties, medical program and home-grow rules, with the date it was last checked. There are also lab results, strain and brand pages, a places-near-me search, news and guides. The terms say nothing is sold, ordered or transacted on the site, and that none of it is legal or medical advice.

Business side and privacy

For businesses, browsing and claiming a profile are free. Paid work is quoted privately: either a market research brief built from the records the site covers, or a sponsored company page labeled as sponsored, with no promise of traffic or leads. The privacy policy says the site doesn't collect health information, rounds device location to about 100 meters without storing it, and doesn't use third-party ad trackers. Reviews and business submissions are moderated before they appear, and the site is for adults 21 and older.
