A closer look at Transly
Transly translates what you type, say and watch. It has an iPhone translation keyboard, two-way spoken conversation mode, live subtitle overlay and bilingual subtitles with SRT export for local videos. Free to download on iOS, Android and Mac, with in-app purchases.
Translating where you already type
The most distinctive part of Transly is its iPhone keyboard. Instead of copying a message into a translation app and back, you open the Transly keyboard in Messages or an email, speak in your own language and the translated text appears in the reply box. The homepage demo shows a reply to "Any plans for tomorrow?" written this way. For anyone who messages across languages every day, that saves a round trip between apps on every reply.
Conversations and video
Conversation mode handles two people speaking in turn. The demo shows a Spanish and English exchange about meeting at a café, with each line transcribed, translated and spoken aloud in a generated voice in the other language.
For video there are two tools. An overlay shows real-time subtitles over another app, such as a short-form video or a call. The video translator works on local files, adding bilingual subtitles that you can save as text or an SRT file. The site lists support for major languages including English, Chinese, Japanese and Spanish.
Availability and data
Transly is on the App Store, Google Play and macOS, free to download with in-app purchases. The website doesn't list prices, so check the store listing for subscription costs. The app comes from Vectorlightyear. Its privacy policy says the text, audio and media you submit are processed through service providers for hosting and content processing, that your content isn't made public or sold, and that you can close your account in the app or request deletion by email.
