Project Note

A closer look at Wayfold: Understand the Bible

An offline Bible study app with chapter-by-chapter guides for Ruth, Jonah, Philippians, James, Habakkuk and Philemon, a World English Bible reader with read-aloud, and maps, journeys and a timeline. No account, ads or tracking.

A study app that shows its working

Wayfold takes a narrow approach to Bible study. Rather than trying to cover the whole Bible, it goes deep on six short books: Ruth, Jonah, Philippians, James, Habakkuk and Philemon, 21 chapters in all. Each chapter gets study questions whose answers point to the verse they come from, a trace exercise that puts the chapter's events in order, and notes tagged as text, history, interpretation or debated.

Those tags are the most useful design choice here. Each note says whether it comes from the text itself, from history or from interpretation, and the timeline does the same with dates, labeling each of its 27 events as firm, approximate, traditional or debated, or undated. In a group discussion, that makes it easier to separate what a passage says from how it has been read.

For leaders and solo readers

Each study has a leader guide that prints as a PDF, so someone running a weekly group can hand out the same material the app shows. Around the studies sit reference tools: a map built from the 774 chapters that mention a place, with 64 key places on Apple Maps rated by how certain their location is, ten journeys, 63 background lessons, 60 cross-passage connections, 113 word notes and 93 people profiles.

The Bible reader uses the World English Bible, works offline, and includes read-aloud, a sleep timer, search, and a choice of Protestant or Catholic canon.

Free, paid and private

Ruth and Jonah, with their leader guides, are free, along with the full reader, the map, the timeline, four of the ten journeys and seven of the 63 background lessons. The other four studies, the remaining journeys and lessons, and highlights and notes come with Wayfold Premium Lifetime, a one-time purchase listed at $89.99 with nothing that renews. That's a high price for an app, though it's a single payment rather than a subscription, and the two free studies are enough to judge the format first.

There's no account, no ads and no tracking, according to the listing, and the App Store privacy label says the developer collects no data. Notes and progress stay on the device. The app is new, with versions 1.0 and 1.1 both released in late October 2026 and no ratings yet, and the listing notes it is designed for iPad and not verified for macOS.
