Project overview

The short version

Read the full Project Note

StateLicense is a contractor-license verification service for the United States. It pulls public records from licensing authorities in Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Washington, plus New York City licenses and New York State's public-work registry, and normalizes them so one request returns the business name, status, licensing authority and a source timestamp, with extras such as classifications or bond amounts where a state publishes them. Anyone can search by business name or verify a license number on the homepage, up to 10 requests a day without an account. A free account gives a live API key and 25 dashboard or API requests a month; Pro costs $49 a month for 1,000, and larger volumes are custom. The site says it is not a licensing authority and that important decisions should be confirmed with the issuing board.
