StateLicense

StateLicense checks US contractor licenses across 15 states and New York City through one free lookup page and one normalized API, so platforms don't have to scrape each licensing board separately.

Project Note

A closer look at StateLicense

StateLicense verifies contractor licenses from public licensing boards in states including California, Florida, Texas, Washington and Virginia, plus New York City. A free public lookup allows 10 checks a day without an account, a free account adds an API key with 25 requests a month, and Pro is $49 a month for 1,000.

What it does

Contractor licenses in the US are issued by different state and city boards, each with its own website, data format and status labels. StateLicense gathers the public records it supports into one place. You can search by business name or check a specific license number, and get back a normalized record: the business name, whether the license is active, the authority that issued it, and when the source last updated it, plus details such as classifications, expiry date, workers' comp or bond amount when a state publishes them.

Coverage currently spans Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Washington, along with New York City licenses and a separate New York State public-work registration list. The coverage page is candid about limits: Arkansas relies on manual roster snapshots and doesn't report current status, Oregon covers active endorsements, and Virginia covers current business licenses.

Lookup, dashboard and API

For a one-off check, the homepage lookup needs no account and allows up to 10 searches or verifications per day. Product teams can sign up without a card for a live API key and a web dashboard, with 25 requests a month on the free plan. The API uses bearer authentication and returns JSON, with examples in curl, Python and JavaScript. Pro costs $49 a month for 1,000 requests shared across the dashboard and API, renews monthly and can be cancelled in the billing portal, and larger volumes are arranged directly.

What to keep in mind

StateLicense is clear that it isn't a government agency or licensing authority. It aggregates and normalizes supported public records, and the about page advises confirming important hiring, legal or compliance decisions with the issuing board. The privacy policy lists Clerk for sign-in, Paddle for payments, Sentry for error reports and Umami for analytics, and logs the search parameters you send so it can enforce plan limits.
