Project Note

A closer look at Larkmile

Larkmile compares campervan and car hire for a Tasmania road trip by pick-up city: 21 rental companies, their depots in Hobart, Launceston and Devonport, van sizes, published rates and links to live prices, plus the ferry and national park rules travellers tend to miss.

Start with where you land

Larkmile organises Tasmanian campervan hire around the pick-up city rather than your travel dates. That matters on an island where the usual arrival points, Hobart, Launceston and Devonport, are split between the south and the north of the island. Choose a city and how many people the van needs to sleep, and the Tasmania page filters its table of 21 rental companies down to the ones that hand over keys there. On November 5, 2026 the site listed 20 companies in Hobart, 3 in Launceston and 1 in Devonport.

A city only gets a tick when the company's own website lists a pick-up there, and the depot table carries the date it was last checked (November 2, 2026 at the time). That rule keeps the table shorter than a booking engine's results, but every entry points to something you can confirm yourself.

The fine print, up front

The car-hire section covers six major brands at the island's airports and adds a column that answers a common planning question: whether the company lets its vehicle onto the Spirit of Tasmania ferry. Europcar is marked as not allowed. Avis, Budget and SIXT need written permission. Hertz and Thrifty are listed as unclear or not stated, and Larkmile says outright that "not stated" doesn't mean allowed. If you're planning to bring a mainland rental across, that column is the reason to visit.

Prices follow the same rule. The site shows a rate only when a company publishes one, with the date it was checked. The "from $130/day" figure on the homepage comes from one company's shoulder-season card for hires of 21 days or more, so use it as a lower bound. For your actual dates, the "Check price" links go to the rental companies or to DiscoverCars.

How it makes money

Larkmile doesn't rent vehicles or take bookings. Some of its links are affiliate links, and the homepage says commissions never change the order of the table. The about page and a separate affiliate disclosure explain the arrangement. That's worth knowing before you click through, though the depot and ferry details are useful whether or not you book from the site.

Coverage is Tasmania only for now, so it won't help with a road trip anywhere else.
