Power Hopper

In the deregulated parts of Texas you pick your own electricity plan, and the cheapest-looking rate isn't always the cheapest bill. Power Hopper's founder, Brent Ward, says he saw that pattern across thousands of North Texas bills: people who thought they had shopped well had picked a bill-credit or usage-threshold plan whose price depended on how much power they used that month. The site is built around avoiding that. You enter your ZIP code to find your market, compare the plans available there, and read each one's Electricity Facts Label and terms. It highlights flat fixed-rate plans, which charge the same energy rate per kWh regardless of usage.

There are a few entry points depending on why you're here. One path is for people moving into a new home, another for a bill that seems too high, where you can upload a bill to see what's behind it. There's also an ESI ID lookup, a solar buyback section and a set of guides on rates, wholesale prices and whether to switch.

Power Hopper is run by BJW Ventures LLC and registered with the Public Utility Commission of Texas as an electricity broker (BR260201). The privacy policy mentions brokerage compensation and referral attribution, and says commission amounts aren't used to decide plan rankings or recommendations. Home shoppers use the self-serve tools, while business accounts are handled personally through a separate inquiry form.

The privacy policy is specific about bill uploads. A bill is read by Power Hopper's own text-extraction and OCR service, not a third-party AI provider, and some text-based PDFs are read in your browser without being sent anywhere. The service keeps a temporary copy only while reading it, and the original bill isn't passed to retail providers or enrollment partners. Uploading a bill doesn't authorize a switch. The policy also notes that bill reading can make mistakes, so check the extracted numbers before relying on them.
