A closer look at Tailcan

Tailcan is a free wet cat food comparison site covering carbohydrates, protein, phosphorus and calories for 144 cans from 15 brands, with shortlists by need and feeding and carb calculators that explain how label values are converted.

What it does

If your cat has just been diagnosed with diabetes, the vet may suggest a low-carb wet food, and then you discover that cat food labels don't print carbohydrate at all. Tailcan fills that gap. It reads the guaranteed analysis and calorie statement from each can, estimates carbohydrate as 100 minus protein, fat, fibre, moisture and ash, and expresses protein, fat and carbs as a share of calories so a watery gravy and a dense pâté compare fairly. When a label leaves out ash, it assumes 2.5% and says so on the recipe page.

Phosphorus gets the same treatment. A label line like 0.25% minimum is converted to milligrams per 100 calories, which is the useful number for cats with kidney concerns. Only 37 of the 144 cans publish a phosphorus value, and the site shows that gap plainly instead of filling it in.

What you can look up

The table covers 144 cans from 15 brands, including Blue Buffalo, Fancy Feast, Hill's Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, Royal Canin, Tiki Cat, Weruva and Ziwi Peak. You can search, compare cans and brands side by side, or start from a shortlist: low carb, defined as under 10% of calories, lower phosphorus, high protein, kittens, chicken-free and fish-free. The allergy tags read the whole ingredient list, so chicken broth and unnamed poultry count as chicken. A feeding calculator sizes daily portions to your cat and the exact can, and the site also lists recalls.

How much to trust it

The about page is specific about sources. 108 labels come from makers' own sites and 36 from retailer pages, every recipe links the page it was read from and the date, and the data was last checked on October 26, 2026. Brands can't pay to be listed or ranked. The full table can be downloaded as a CSV and reused under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence, and each recipe has a link to report a correction.

It is a label reference, not veterinary advice, and the site says so. Guaranteed analysis figures are minimums and maximums rather than exact amounts, and the 2.5% ash assumption adds some uncertainty. Use it to narrow a shortlist, then check the can you buy and talk to your vet before changing food for a cat with diabetes, kidney disease or allergies.
