Project overview

The short version

Read the full Project Note

Tailcan compares canned cat food using only what is printed on the label. Pet food labels don't list carbohydrate and give phosphorus as a vague percentage, so Tailcan estimates carbs as 100 minus protein, fat, fibre, moisture and ash, converts everything to a share of calories, and turns phosphorus into milligrams per 100 calories. The result is a table of 144 cans from 15 brands, from Fancy Feast and Friskies to Ziwi Peak, with shortlists for low-carb, lower-phosphorus, high-protein, kitten, chicken-free and fish-free food. Calculators estimate carbs from a label and how many cans a cat needs a day. Each recipe page links the label source and the date it was checked, and the full table is downloadable as a CSV under a Creative Commons licence. The site says brands can't pay for placement, that it isn't veterinary advice, and that owners should ask a vet before changing a sick cat's diet.
