A closer look at Device-Test
Device-Test runs more than 20 hardware checks in your browser, from microphone and camera to keyboard, gamepad and dead-pixel tests. No account, no install, and live readings are processed locally. Free and ad-supported.
Before the meeting starts
Picture a call that starts in five minutes and a microphone you aren't sure about. That's the situation Device-Test is set up for. The microphone test shows a live level meter as you speak, the camera test shows your webcam feed, and the screen test checks that screen sharing works in your browser. Each one asks for permission only when you start it, and there's no account or download.
The speaker test goes further than playing a sound. It has a tone generator, a stereo channel test to confirm left and right aren't swapped, and a frequency sweep.
Testing new or used hardware
Several tests are better suited to checking a device you just bought. The display test fills the screen with solid colors so dead pixels, bright spots and backlight bleed stand out. The keyboard test marks every key as you press it and tracks progress, which is a quick way to check a secondhand keyboard. The gamepad test shows buttons, sticks and triggers in real time, and the MIDI test gives you a virtual piano and an event log for a controller.
For phones and tablets there are touch, vibration, battery, gyroscope, light-sensor, location and Bluetooth tests. These depend on browser support, so some won't run on every device. An input lab adds click-speed, jitter, scroll and reaction-time tests.
Free, with ads
Every web test is free with no paid tier. The pricing page says the site is supported by clearly identified advertising. Device-Test says live camera, microphone and sensor readings are processed locally in the browser. The network speed test still has to exchange data with a server to measure your connection. Native apps for iPhone and iPad, Android and Mac are listed on the apps page, with Windows marked coming soon.
