Project Note

A closer look at Outbound

A Mac application firewall and network monitor with per-app and per-host rules, connection history and configurable prompts.

Follow a connection back to its app

Blocking an entire app can also stop the part you want to use. Outbound offers a narrower choice: inspect its outgoing connections and create a rule for a particular host or domain. Its monitor shows the app, destination, traffic and reason a connection was allowed. That context gives you something concrete to investigate before deciding what to block.

Rules can last for a single connection, an hour or until the app quits, among other durations. A temporary rule could help when you want to reconsider a destination later without forgetting a permanent exception. The app was not installed and its filtering behavior was not tested for this note.

An unanswered prompt can allow traffic

Outbound has three modes. Learn allows connections while building history, Ask prompts about new ones and Strict blocks connections without a matching rule. The terms explain the Ask default: an unanswered request is allowed after eight seconds for UDP or 60 seconds for TCP, then added to Review. You can change the waiting period for TCP or choose to block unanswered requests.

Choose that behavior deliberately. A prompt is not, by itself, a promise that traffic will remain blocked until you respond. Restrictive rules can also interrupt logins, updates and other app functions.

Local history, with optional AI connections

The privacy policy says rules and connection history stay on the Mac, with local audit logs retained for 30 days. Crash reporting and usage statistics are off unless enabled. Activation and periodic licence checks still contact Dodo Payments.

An optional cloud-model summary can send totals, app names, website domains and countries for the selected period. The policy says it excludes connection contents and offers a preview of the request. Connected AI apps have a separate integration for asking about network activity and proposing rule changes; those changes require your confirmation. Review what you share before enabling either route.

A paid download for recent Macs

The download page lists version 1.0.19 for Intel and Apple-silicon Macs running macOS 14 or later. On October 12, 2026, a personal licence was listed at $29 for the first 50 licences, then $39, covering two Macs and updates through version 2.x. There is no trial. The published terms instead offer a full refund requested within 14 days of purchase.
