A closer look at Rauschwerk Normseiten-Rechner
A free German-language calculator for character-based manuscript page counts and fee estimates using a chosen per-page rate.
Put the page basis beside the price
A fee per page is hard to compare until “page” has a definition. Rauschwerk Normseiten-Rechner makes that choice visible: paste text, choose 1,500, 1,650 or 1,800 characters including spaces, and enter the rate you agreed to use. The German-language tool then shows character and word totals, the resulting page quantity and a fee estimate.
Its own example illustrates the difference. A text with 16,500 characters is ten units at a 1,650-character basis, but eleven at 1,500. At an illustrative €6 per unit, the totals are €60 and €66. That rate is an arithmetic example, not a suggested market price. The calculator uses the unrounded quantity; it does not automatically round up to whole pages.
Character units are not laid-out pages
The page explains that a manuscript template with up to 30 lines and 60 characters per line is a layout convention. Short lines, dialogue and paragraph spacing take up room, so dividing a character count by 1,800 does not recreate that document. This calculator does not simulate wrapping or page breaks. A publisher’s required template still determines a formatted submission.
Spaces count, line breaks do not, and a tab counts as one space. Unicode is normalized before counting; a composite emoji may still count as several characters. Those rules can produce different totals from a word processor, particularly when hidden characters or footnotes are involved.
A free tool from a publisher
Rauschwerk provides the calculator without an account and says the text stays on the device. Its privacy policy separately describes website analytics and technical hosting logs. ProjectRadar read the calculator, methodology and privacy pages without submitting a manuscript or independently checking its processing.
The useful output is a clearly labelled estimate tied to the chosen counting basis. Minimum fees, taxes, special material and any rounding rule still sit outside that simple multiplication.
