A closer look at Backspace: macOS Live Wallpapers
A macOS live-wallpaper app advertised with scene previews, favorites, and playlists for multiple displays.
What the product offers
The public site shows wallpaper entries with resolution, duration, file size, and loop information. It describes desktop and Lock Screen playback. No app was downloaded; installation and actual playback behavior remain Not reviewed.
The current build is version 1.1.6 and needs macOS 14.6 or newer. The homepage says the library holds more than 1,000 wallpapers sorted by style, colour and mood, and that playback pauses when a wallpaper is offscreen to keep CPU, memory and battery use low. Those performance points are the developer's own claims.
Who it may suit
This may fit a Mac user who wants a managed library of motion backgrounds rather than preparing video files manually. The site describes favorites, downloads, and per-display playlists. Multi-display behavior and CPU, memory, battery, and storage use remain Not reviewed.
What caught my eye
Showing file and loop details before a download gives the library useful context. The site promotes a trial and lifetime purchase, but current price, licensing, and refund terms should be checked directly. Those terms and playback quality remain Not reviewed.
Price, license and data
Backspace is sold as a one-time purchase for a perpetual license, with updates for the current major version included. The price only appears at checkout with Paddle, the payment provider, and the pricing page says later price changes don't affect people who already bought it. A license works on one Mac at a time, and support can reset the activation when you move to a new Mac. Refunds are available within 14 days of purchase, handled through Paddle.
There are two versions. Backspace is also on the Mac App Store, but its help center says Apple's App Sandbox limits some system integrations there, including Lock Screen wallpapers, so the standalone download is the full app. App Store buyers can contact support about a discount toward the standalone version.
The privacy policy, last updated August 7, 2026, says the app stores the license key, a few Paddle purchase identifiers and a hardware ID that ties the license to one Mac. Likes, downloads and applied wallpapers are counted anonymously, using a random installation identifier that isn't tied to the license or hardware ID, to build the Popular and Trending lists. Backspace is made by Aura Company, whose other Mac apps include DynamicHorizon, and the site states it isn't affiliated with Apple.
