Project Note

A closer look at Draw A Country

Draw A Country is a free geography drawing game. You sketch a country or US state from memory on a covered map, reveal the real border, and get a score with matched, missed and extra areas plus a tip for your next try. Scoring runs in your browser with no account.

What it does

Draw A Country asks you to draw a country rather than name it. You pick a country, or take the daily challenge, and see a regional map with a pale cover over the answer and neighbouring names around it. You draw the outer border as one loop from memory, getting the overall width, height and largest bends roughly right rather than tracing every wiggle, then press Reveal & score.

The result overlays your drawing on the reference border and marks the difference as Matched, Missed where you drew too little, and Extra where you drew too much. You get an outline score out of 100, broken into border fit and contour detail, plus a written tip about the largest mistake. Then Retry same shape lets you fix that one area while the lesson is fresh. Size and position on the canvas do not affect the score, so you are judged on the shape.

What you can practise

The country catalogue covers 195 outlines, the 193 UN member states plus Vatican City and Palestine, sorted by region and a measured difficulty score, so you can start with a compact border before trying an island chain or a long coastline. There are also US states and a flag game where you paint a flag's colours and layout, with separate scores for memory and assisted attempts. A result can be copied as text or downloaded as an image card to share.

How it is built

The about page explains the data. Country borders come from Natural Earth public-domain data pinned to a fixed version, and US states from the Census Bureau's 2025 cartographic boundary files. The scoring method is published, and the site notes that disputed borders appear only to support the drawing task, not as an official position.

Everything runs in the browser. Drafts, best scores and recent challenges sit in local storage and are not uploaded, there is no account or advertising, and analytics come from a cookieless, self-hosted Plausible setup. If your browser blocks storage, you can still play, but unfinished drawings will not survive a reload.
