Project Note

A closer look at Drugfree: Sober Tracker

Drugfree brings sober-time tracking, urge logs, journaling and optional coping tools into an app for iPhone and iPad.

More context than a day counter

Drugfree puts urge logs beside the time someone has spent away from a substance or habit. An entry can include intensity, a trigger, the response tried and notes. That gives the journal a practical use beyond counting days: someone can look back at the circumstances they recorded and compare what happened next.

The current App Store description also lists check-ins, short urge timers, grounding prompts, reminders and charts over seven, 30 and 90 days. A reset keeps the recorded history. The app calls one of its measures a Recovery Score, but the website describes it as a reflection aid, not a diagnosis. ProjectRadar has not tested the scoring or assessed health outcomes.

Local tracking, optional online chat

The distinction between the tracker and the Sober Coach is worth understanding before writing anything sensitive. The developer's September 29 privacy policy says core recovery records stay on the device without an account or cloud sync. Optional Face ID or passcode protection controls access to the app.

Sober Coach uses Google's Gemini service online. For current versions, the policy says it requires adult confirmation and explicit consent, followed by sending a message. That message and up to 12 recent chat messages pass through the developer's Cloudflare service to Google. The policy does not promise zero provider retention. Declining the coach leaves the rest of the app and its support links available.

Paid access on Apple devices

The listing requires iOS 17 or later and supports iPhone and iPad. Downloading is free, while access is sold through weekly, monthly or yearly subscriptions and a lifetime purchase. The yearly option advertises a three-day trial for eligible new users; local prices and renewal terms appear before purchase.

Drugfree may suit adults who want a personal record of urges and habits without a social feed. Its public materials explicitly separate tracking and general support from medical care, supervised detox, therapy and emergency help. Those limits apply to the AI coach too.
