Project Note

A closer look at Mental

Mental is a mood tracker and journal for iPhone. Pick one of 49 feelings, add a note if you want, and look back at patterns over time. Optional Pro features add daily wrap-ups and Ask Mental, a voice or text conversation about what you've written.

What it does

Mental keeps a mood check-in small. You choose from 49 feelings, add a line about what happened if it helps, and move on. Tags and streaks are there, and the site makes a point of not treating a missed day as a failure. Over time you can scroll back through entries and see patterns. If you connect Apple Health, check-ins are saved there as State of Mind, and Mental can show your sleep, steps, daylight and workouts alongside your moods.

The Pro tier adds AI features: daily wrap-ups, automatic tags, Memory, suggested actions, and Ask Mental, a voice or text conversation about a situation or decision. When a conversation reaches a conclusion, you can save it as a keepsake, or turn it into a check-in note you edit yourself. Memories can be traced to the entry they came from, corrected or deleted.

Privacy is the main pitch

The privacy policy, updated November 2, 2026, is unusually detailed. There's no account. Your journal stays on your iPhone and syncs through your private iCloud, and the developers say they keep no copy and can't read it. Saved Ask Mental conversations are stored on the iPhone only, without iCloud sync.

The AI features are the exception, so it's worth knowing how they work. They're off until you turn them on, and before the first request the app names the provider and asks permission. When a feature runs, your words and relevant journal text go through Mental's Cloudflare relay to DeepInfra, the AI service, without your name or an account ID. Background jobs sit on the relay for up to 24 hours, and DeepInfra handles requests under its own terms. Voice input is transcribed on the iPhone unless you allow Apple's transcription. Product analytics through PostHog are on by default but exclude note text and moods, and you can turn them off in Settings.

Price and limits

The app is free, with Pro listed at $7.99 a month or $49.99 a year on the US App Store; the first week of daily wrap-ups is free. It needs iOS 18 or later, and the AI features aren't available in every region. Mental says plainly that it doesn't provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, so it's a journal, not a substitute for care.
