A closer look at Profundis

Profundis is an infrastructure search tool for security researchers. Start from a domain or IP, find subdomains and related hosts, and follow shared certificates or tracking IDs in a graph. A free account gets 25 credits a month; Solo is $45 a month.

Starting from one domain

Say you're looking into a phishing site, or checking what a company has left reachable on the internet. Profundis lets you type in a domain or an IP address and see what its index holds about it. Host and DNS searches work in a limited preview without an account, while certificate and WHOIS searches need one. The query syntax also takes fields, so a search like technologies:*nginx* finds hosts by the software they report.

The more distinctive part is how it connects records. Pivot takes a domain, an IP address or a favicon as a seed and draws the related records as a graph. Select a node and it shows what that record shares with others, whether that's an address, a certificate, a favicon, a tracking ID or a registrant, and you can pivot again from there. Manual recon usually means copying one value into the next lookup by hand, and Pivot puts that chain in one view.

Reading the results carefully

The documentation is plain about the limits. Records reflect what was observed, sometimes on different dates and with partial coverage. Shared hosting, a matching icon or a registration value is described as a lead rather than proof of common ownership, and a missing record doesn't prove a service is offline. It's a useful warning to keep in mind when a graph seems to tie two sites together.

WHOIS records can include a registrant's name and email address. The privacy policy says access to that registrant data is limited to paying customers, and that anyone can ask for data about them to be removed through the contact page.

Plans, monitors and the API

A free account gets 25 credits a month, up to 300 subdomains per enumeration and core search with up to three filters at once. Solo is $45 a month for 2,500 credits, API and WHOIS access and two real-time monitors, and a 7-day pass costs $18. Monitors save a query and send new results by email or into a team's tools. The docs describe them as matching future observations, not as a live uptime check.

Organization plans add client workspaces, shared credit allowances and single sign-on. An MCP server at mcp.profundis.io lets assistants such as Claude or ChatGPT run the same searches, which needs API access and spends the account's credits. Profundis is made by Perspective Analytics SAS, a company registered in France.
