A closer look at Take Dictation
Take Dictation is a private Mac dictation app: hold a key, speak, and cleaned-up text appears where you type, processed on your Mac for $39 once.
Hold a key, talk, keep writing
Take Dictation is for the moment when typing slows you down more than thinking does. You hold a key, say the sentence, let go, and cleaned-up text lands wherever your cursor is: a Mail reply, a note, a Messages thread, a form field. The site times the gap between releasing the key and the text appearing at about 0.2 seconds, using a real dictation by the founder that it marks as illustrated. It also says the app tidies what you said without rewriting it.
It's English only, and it needs an Apple silicon Mac on macOS 26 or later, so older Intel Macs are out.
What stays on the Mac
Privacy is the main pitch, and the policy backs it with specifics. Dictation audio and transcripts are processed on the device, and Shifted Music LLC, which publishes the app, says it doesn't receive them or send them anywhere for transcription, cleanup, training or advertising. There's no account and no cloud sync. The app does make two kinds of network check. One looks for updates on a signed feed and carries version information. The other is a licence check about once a week that sends the order reference and app version, never what you said.
Price and trial
Take Dictation costs $39 once, and one purchase covers everyone in your household. There's a fully featured 14-day trial before you pay, plus a refund policy and a comparison page against the dictation built into macOS. If you work in English on a recent Mac and want dictation that doesn't leave the machine, the trial is the easy way to find out whether the cleanup suits how you talk.
