Project Note

A closer look at Assay

Assay reads a list of company websites, scores each against a plain-language description of your ideal customer, and fills in fields such as what they sell, who they sell to and whether they're hiring, each with a quoted sentence and the page it came from.

What it does

Enrichment tools tend to hand you a column of claims with no way to see where they came from. Assay is built around the opposite rule, which the site sums up as no quote, no field. You give it a list of company websites, or describe the companies you want and let it find them, and write in plain words what a good customer looks like. For each company it reads up to three public pages, such as the homepage, about page and careers page, then scores the fit out of 100 and fills in fields like what they sell, who they sell to, size, hiring and pricing.

Each field has to be backed by a sentence copied from those pages. A script then searches the fetched pages for that exact sentence, after folding quotes, dashes, spacing and case. A second model judges whether the sentence actually supports the field. Fields that fail either step aren't deleted. They stay on the row with a mark, and a score with no verified quote behind it is pulled down to 40. The public sample run from October 31 shows how often that matters: 20 companies read for under a dollar, with 33 quotes missing from the page and 17 more that didn't back their field.

Who it is for

Outbound agencies and B2B sales teams who write to companies after researching them, and who get asked by clients where a detail came from. Each row links to its source page, runs can be shared read-only with a client, and exports to CSV, HubSpot and Smartlead keep the quote and verified flag beside each field. A webhook feeds Make, n8n or Smartlead. Assay doesn't send email itself.

It researches companies, not people. The site and privacy policy say it doesn't find or store personal contact details or build person-level profiles. If a company page names someone, the name can appear inside a quoted sentence but isn't pulled into a field.

Price and data

Plans are flat monthly prices billed through Polar. Bench is $149 for 400 companies and one seat, Agency is $399 for 2,000 companies with unlimited seats, and Own It at $899 runs the pipeline in your own stack with your own API keys. The first ten accounts can take the Agency plan at $199 a month, held for 12 months. A company that can't be read doesn't count against the cap. There's no trial account, but you can check up to 10 companies free once a day, with results sent by email.

The privacy policy, updated October 31, 2026, names Machines + Words (Pty) Ltd in Cape Town as the responsible company and lists each sub-processor. Pages are fetched through Firecrawl and scored by Anthropic's Claude through the Vercel AI Gateway, and account data and runs sit in Supabase in the United States. Assay says plainly that it has no customers yet, so the numbers on the site come from its own public runs.
