A closer look at BioCaly
An Android nutrition and fitness app that combines a food diary, calorie and macro tracking, meal-photo nutrition estimates, recipe ideas and workout planning.
Logging without typing everything
BioCaly gives you three ways to record a meal. Take a photo and it returns an estimate of calories and macronutrients, scan a barcode to pull in packaged-food data, or add one of its recipes straight to the diary. The submission is careful about the photo feature, calling the results estimates and suggesting you check portions and ingredients before saving, which is the right expectation for any photo-based calorie count.
From your details and activity level, the app calculates basal and total daily energy expenditure, and you can set the nutrient targets by hand instead. With permission, steps and activity from Health Connect feed into the daily budget. A 7-day meal plan and shopping list round it out.
Where your data goes
The privacy policy, which is in German and dated October 2026, describes a local-first setup. The food diary, recipes and body data are stored in a database on the phone, and sign-in uses anonymous Firebase Authentication. When you use photo or text recognition, the image is compressed on the device and sent to Google Gemini through cloud functions, and the policy says it isn't stored permanently or used for model training. The Play Store data safety section reports no data shared with third parties.
Early days
BioCaly has only just gone public. The Play Store listing, updated October 15, 2026, shows 10+ downloads, and its release note says the app is now publicly available. The store title is in German, while the description is in English. The listing calls it an aid for more conscious food choices and not a substitute for medical advice.
