Project Note

A closer look at HotRepo

HotRepo shows daily, weekly and monthly GitHub trending boards with a plain-English review of each repository, in English and Chinese. A remote MCP server lets Claude Code, Cursor and other assistants pull the boards and reviews, free for light use or $9.99 a month.

What it does

GitHub Trending tells you what gained stars today but not what the project is or whether it's relevant to you. HotRepo fills that gap. It mirrors the daily, weekly and monthly boards, adds a board for new repositories, lets you filter by language, and keeps the history so you can see what was trending on a past date. Every listed repository gets a short description on the board and a full review page.

The reviews are the useful part. The page for mattpocock/skills, for example, explains that it's a set of small Markdown skill files for coding agents, lists the kinds of skills it includes, and walks through what changes in a typical workflow. Pages also show stars, language, license, age and related Hacker News threads, and repositories are grouped into topics such as AI engineering, developer tools, data, machine learning and DevOps. There are reports and badges too, and the whole site is available in English and Chinese.

The MCP server

HotRepo also runs a remote MCP server, so you can ask Claude Code, Cursor or another assistant what's trending and get today's data instead of the model's memory. It exposes seven tools, including get_trending by period, language and date, get_repo for a full review with trending history, search_repos by keyword or topic, and topic listings. The free plan allows 30 tool calls a day, 10 a minute, one API key and the last seven days of history. Pro is $9.99 a month for 2,000 calls a day, 60 a minute, three keys and full history.

Worth knowing

The reviews summarise each project's purpose, usage and constraints, so they're a fast way to triage a list. They're still a summary written by HotRepo, so check the repository itself before adopting anything.
