Project Note
A closer look at Insect Sound ID
A browser tool that suggests insect names from short audio clips, with a free signal check and paid identification credits.
A recording gives the search somewhere to start
Insect Sound ID takes a sound you can't place and suggests an insect name, with an explanation of the call's audible features. Its browser tool accepts recorded audio or a WAV, MP3, M4A or OGG file up to 25 MB. You select a clear five to ten seconds before submitting it. Optional location and time details give the model more context.
That suits a garden listener trying to follow up on an unfamiliar repeated call. A description of rhythm, pauses and tone gives you something to compare with reference recordings. Photos can be attached as private notes, but the service says they do not affect its automatic audio analysis.
The wrong answer is part of the demonstration
The public examples show a recording labeled Common True Katydid by its source receiving a Fall Field Cricket suggestion at 85% AI confidence. Location and date were already included. The example makes the risk concrete. A confident name can still send your search in the wrong direction.
The site also shows a matching cicada example and two clips that returned no full identification. These are the maker's published examples, not independent testing for this note. No recording was submitted or paid result purchased. Treat the suggestions as educational leads to check against other observations, never as a safety or pest-control determination.
What the free check leaves out
The free preview checks for a usable signal and does not name an insect. On October 2, 2026, the site listed one identification credit for $2.99 or five for $6.99, with no subscription. Full results require email sign-in. A delivered result uses a credit even if later comparison points to a different species; when no full ID is returned, the stated rule is that you keep the credit.
The privacy policy says audio and optional photos are scheduled for deletion after seven days, with daily cleanup potentially removing them shortly afterward. Text results and account records may remain so you can revisit results and use credits. A short clip without nearby conversation is a sensible choice for both the identification task and the material you send.
