Project Note

A closer look at CutoutUp

CutoutUp cuts a person out of a short video, keeps supported audio, and exports a transparent WebM, all processed locally in the browser. Guests get three free tasks a day for clips up to 120 seconds at 720p. Green-screen, background-swap and GIF tools sit alongside, and optional cloud processing uses paid credits.

What it does

CutoutUp takes a short video of a person and gives you the same clip with the background gone. Pick an MP4, MOV or WebM, and the portrait model, which loads from the site, separates the person frame by frame in your browser. The result is a VP9 WebM with real transparency, so you can drop the presenter onto a slide, a screen recording or a new scene in an editor. Supported audio is kept, converted to Opus if needed, and if it can't be preserved the tool stops rather than handing you a silent file.

For things other than people, the green-screen tool keys out green, blue or another solid colour, which works for bottles, packaging and props filmed against a plain backdrop. A background-change tool adds a solid colour or your own image, and a GIF tool removes solid-colour backgrounds from animations. The homepage examples show the actual exports, and it says the source clips were AI-generated and the masks were not retouched by hand.

Limits worth knowing

The site is frank about where it falls short. Free and local processing handle clips up to 120 seconds at up to 720p and 30 fps. Desktop Chrome or Edge is recommended, phones are listed as unverified, and HDR and Dolby Vision footage isn't supported. Transparent WebM also needs an editor that understands it, and the site notes its own Mac tests found problems in CapCut and iMovie, so try the sample file in your editor before planning a project around it. It also says it is not professional matting and can't remove general objects from complex scenes.

Pricing and privacy

Guests get three free tasks a day without signing in, and signed-in accounts six, with no watermark. Unlimited local processing costs $4.99 for one month as a one-time purchase that doesn't renew. Credit packs, from $9.90 for 200 credits, pay for optional cloud processing, charged by video duration.

The privacy policy separates the two paths. Local tools never upload your media. Cloud processing uploads the original video to the site's Cloudflare and Singapore-hosted infrastructure and sends VEED a temporary link to perform the background removal. Payments go through Waffo, accounts can use Google sign-in, and self-hosted Umami analytics can be switched off from the footer or by Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control.
