A closer look at Math 24 Solver
Math 24 Solver is a free site for the classic make-24 puzzle. Play timed or untimed rounds, switch to a kids mode or a 10-puzzle challenge, enter any four numbers to see every solution, and print PDF card sets for class.
What it does
The 24 puzzle is simple to explain and easy to get stuck on. You get four numbers, use each once with +, −, × and ÷, and finish at exactly 24. Math 24 Solver gives you three ways to play: Classic, a Math 24 for Kids mode, and a 10-Puzzle Challenge. You can race a 120-second clock or play without a timer. In the game window you pick a number, an operation and a second number, then keep combining results until one number is left.
The solver is the other half. Enter any four numbers and it lists every valid solution, including the awkward ones that need a fraction partway through. The homepage's example is 3, 3, 8, 8, whose answer is 8 ÷ (3 − 8 ÷ 3).
For classrooms
The printable cards page is the most useful piece for teachers. You choose how many easy (numbers up to 10), medium (up to 20) and hard (up to 36) puzzles to include, pick a target, and decide where the answers go, then download a PDF with an answer key. The target doesn't have to be 24. You can switch to 36 or 40, or set any target from 10 to 100, which makes it easy to vary the challenge across a class.
The site also has a rules page and a short strategy section, such as starting from factor pairs of 24 like 3 × 8 or 4 × 6, or cancelling two numbers out to 1 or 0.
Worth knowing
It's free with no sign-up. The site states it isn't affiliated with Suntex International.
