Project Note

A closer look at RoamDial

RoamDial is a free world radio map. It plays live stations from around the world in the browser, picked at random, from a draggable sky arranged by genre, or by country, with no sign-up and no ads.

What it does

RoamDial is a way to hear what someone in another country is listening to right now. Open the site and press Start listening, and it picks a live station for you. If you'd rather choose, drag the sky of dots, hold the reticle over one for a moment, and it starts playing. Each dot is a station, laid out by genre so that neighbours tend to share a style, and zooming in opens a city into a spiral of its local stations.

The controls are built for hopping. The arrow keys move to the next, previous or nearby station, F saves one, and slash opens search. There's also a plain globe view and a browse-by-country list. When one stream from a station fails, RoamDial tries that station's next stream. The about page says it only shows what it can actually get, so a station with no known city is placed by country, and bitrates appear as the station reports them.

Who it is for

People who like radio as a window into a place: its language, its ads, the songs a local host picked this morning. It also suits language learners after real speech and anyone who wants background music they didn't choose. It isn't a music service, and the about page says so. What you hear is whatever each station is broadcasting, and coverage depends on the community directory.

Where the stations and your data go

The station directory comes from Radio Browser, a community-run database, and place names from GeoNames. Audio plays directly from each station's own server rather than through RoamDial, and stations can ask for removal by email. There are no accounts and no ads on the site.

Saved stations, songs and settings stay in your browser's local storage. The privacy page, updated October 30, 2026, says RoamDial collects anonymous usage and error reports kept for 90 days, using a keyed code instead of your IP address, and uses Google Analytics with advertising features off. In the EU, UK and Switzerland, analytics loads only after you allow it. Lyrics lookups go to third-party services that see your IP address. The same page covers separate iPhone and Android apps.
