A closer look at SKPDowngrade

SKPDowngrade converts SketchUp files saved in 2024, 2025 or 2026 into a version that SketchUp 2017 through 2025 can open. You drop in a .skp, pick the target year and download the older copy. The first file up to 100 MB is free, and uploads are deleted within 15 minutes.

Opening a file from a newer SketchUp

SketchUp files only open in the version that saved them or a later one. That's a problem when a designer on the latest release sends a model to a client, contractor or teacher still running an older copy. SKPDowngrade fixes that without installing anything. Drop in the .skp, pick which year the other computer runs, and download an older copy. It handles files saved in 2024, 2025 or 2026 and can target any year from 2017 to 2025, with 2017 as the most compatible choice.

Geometry and layers carry over. Materials carry over when the target year can store them, so newer material features may be simplified. Your original file isn't touched.

Checking a file first

If you don't know which version saved a file, the version checker reads its header in the browser and tells you, without uploading it. There are also pages for common paths such as 2026 to 2017 or 2024 to 2020.

Cost and files

The first file up to 100 MB is free with no account, and signing in adds one more free conversion. After that, conversions are paid, with details on the pricing section. Sign-in can use Google or an email address. The privacy policy says a converted file is kept only long enough to write the older version and deleted within 15 minutes, and models are never published or used as training data. The site also says plainly that it isn't affiliated with Trimble, which owns SketchUp.

It suits architects, designers, students and contractors who swap models across SketchUp versions and only need the occasional conversion.
