Project Note

A closer look at Mic Test

Mic Test at mictest.vip checks a microphone in the browser. It shows input level and a waveform, records a short clip to play back or download as MP3 or WAV, and can loop your voice to headphones. Audio is processed locally and not uploaded.

Checking a mic before the call

Most people find out their microphone isn't working when someone on a call says so. Mic Test is a quick way to check first. Click Start, allow access, and a meter and waveform respond to your voice, with the current input percentage and peak level. If nothing moves, the input device selector lets you switch to the right microphone; device names appear once permission is granted.

Recording is optional. The page records while the test runs, so you can play back what you sound like and download a short clip as MP3, or WAV if you want an uncompressed file. Loopback sends your voice straight to your headphones, which is useful for hearing background noise or how a gain change sounds.

What your browser actually opened

The diagnostics panel is the detail that sets this apart from a simple level meter. It reports what the browser set up for this session: the device, sample rate, channel count, sample size and latency, and whether echo cancellation, noise suppression and auto gain are on. Those processing settings explain a lot of odd results, such as a voice that pumps up and down because auto gain is fighting the room. Advanced options let you change those constraints and restart the test to compare.

Privacy

The test runs in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari with no install. The privacy policy says microphone audio is processed locally for the meter, waveform and recording, and isn't uploaded or stored on the site's servers. Device names stay on the page. The site does collect aggregated usage metrics like page views.
