A closer look at WorkMonitor
WorkMonitor tracks work time automatically through desktop agents and browser extensions, then maps the hours to projects, timesheets, invoices and payroll. It is free for two users; paid plans start at $8 per user a month and mostly change screenshot frequency and retention.
What it does
WorkMonitor watches the working day on employees' computers and turns it into records a manager can act on. A single agent runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, with extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Safari. It logs which apps are open, how long someone is active or idle, and, where the employer enables it, still screenshots at a chosen interval. From that it fills timesheets against projects, so nobody types hours in by hand, and it builds a productivity score from focus time, app mix and idle time. The site's point is that each score opens into the activity that produced it, so a manager can check the number instead of arguing about it.
Further along, approved timesheets flow into payroll exports and client invoices, and projects show their budget burn and margin. Six AI checks flag patterns such as after-hours creep, a workload running hot, or timesheets that don't match the recorded activity, each with the evidence attached. The homepage includes a clickable sample workspace, so you can see the screens without signing up.
What it captures and how long it keeps it
The privacy policy from Digital Socket LLC is detailed. Keystrokes and mouse events become an activity level only, and the company says the agent cannot capture the text of a keystroke. Screenshot cadence, blurring and app exclusions are applied on the device before an image leaves it. Idle time is timed but kept out of the score.
Retention depends on the plan and the employer's settings. Free keeps screenshots for 30 days, Pro for 180 days, Business for 365, and Enterprise can keep them longer or indefinitely, with a daily sweep deleting anything past the window. The policy lists sub-processors on a separate page, publishes a worker privacy notice and a data processing addendum, and states that nothing captured about a monitored worker is sold or used for advertising.
Pricing and fit
The free plan has no time limit for up to two users, with screenshots no more often than every 15 minutes and seven days of analytics history. Pro costs $8 per user a month, or $6.67 billed yearly, and adds faster capture, unlimited history, the AI copilot and an API. Business, at $14 or $11.67 yearly, adds payroll export and invoicing, and Enterprise adds SSO and a tamper-evident audit log.
This suits agencies and remote teams that bill by the hour and already intend to track time closely. It is still monitoring software, and whether it feels fair to the people being tracked depends on what the employer turns on and how it is explained, as well as on local employment law. The about page also says the company holds no security certifications yet, which matters to buyers whose clients ask for them.
