A closer look at PDF Annotation Remover

Remove PDF highlights, sticky notes and markup locally in your browser. Quick Remove is free; filters and batch removal need Pro.

Cleaning up a marked-up PDF

Say a contract has come back from review, or you highlighted a paper for a reading group, and now you need a clean copy to send on. PDF Annotation Remover is built for that. You open the PDF, let it scan the annotation layer, then choose Quick Remove to clear everything or Customize to pick what goes. Customize filters by annotation type, author or page, which helps when you want to drop one reviewer's comments and keep another's.

It covers the 14 standard interactive annotation types: highlights, underlines, strikeouts, squiggly underlines, sticky notes, free-text boxes, ink drawings, lines, rectangles, circles, polygons, polylines, stamps and carets. Form fields, bookmarks and links stay in place, and the page text underneath doesn't change.

What it won't do

The tool page is upfront about its limits, and they matter before you trust the output. Removing annotations isn't redaction. If confidential words sit in the body text, they stay there, and the site points you to dedicated redaction software. Highlights made on paper before a page was scanned, or marks an editor flattened into the page, are part of the image and can't be removed as annotations. If the PDF is digitally signed, removing annotations invalidates the signature even though the signature field stays, and the scanner asks you to confirm before it goes ahead.

Where your file goes

The tool page, the privacy policy and the terms all say PDFs are parsed in your browser with WebAssembly and aren't uploaded for parsing or export. The terms add that the service doesn't keep users' PDF files. You don't need an account for the free tool. Pro users sign in with Google or GitHub, and the privacy policy, updated April 15, 2026, names Creem for payments, Neon for subscription records, Vercel for hosting and Google Analytics 4 for usage stats. No person or company is named as the operator, and the policy refers only to "the PDFAnnotations service operator".

Price

Quick Remove is free. Saving a customized cleaned PDF and batch removal need Pro, which costs $2.99 for a 24-hour pass, $5.99 a month or $49.99 a year. The free plan across the PDFAnnotations tools is capped at 3 PDFs a day. First-time monthly and yearly subscribers get a 7-day money-back guarantee, and the 24-hour pass is excluded from it.
