Project Note

A closer look at pixelate.video

A free browser editor for hiding faces, plates and text in a video or photo. Faces are found and followed automatically, other areas can be boxed and tracked, and nothing is uploaded.

What it does

Before a video goes online, someone often has to hide something in it: a stranger's face in the background, a child at a school event, a number plate in dashcam footage, a colleague's name on a screen. Most online blur tools ask you to upload that footage first. pixelate.video does the work in your browser instead.

Open a video or photo and it looks for faces using Google's MediaPipe face detector, served from the site and run locally. Each face it finds becomes an oval that follows the person as they move. For anything else, such as a plate, a screen or a sign, you draw a box, oval, brush stroke or censor bar, and a tracker compares that patch against each frame to keep it covered as the shot changes. Every region can be pixelated, blurred or blacked out, and in a video each one gets its own start and end time.

Photos open in the same editor, which is handy for group shots, car listings or screenshots with names in them. Saved copies leave the camera's location and date details behind.

Limits worth knowing

The site is direct about where this can fail. Tiny, distant or turned-away faces can be missed, so you should watch the export all the way through before sharing it. It also warns that light blur and small pixel blocks can leave text and faces readable, so the solid black box is the safer choice for anything sensitive. Guides cover blurring faces automatically, tracking a plate through dashcam footage and blurring text in a screen recording, including on an iPhone in Safari.

Privacy

The privacy page says the video you open is decoded, masked and saved on your device and never transmitted. If your browser can't read a file type, the page downloads ffmpeg.wasm, about 10 MB, from the site to convert it locally. There's no sign-up and no watermark. Visits are counted with Cloudflare Web Analytics and Ahrefs Web Analytics, and Google Analytics runs only if you allow it.
