A closer look at Tarot Card Gen

Tarot Card Gen is a free tarot card generator. Draw 1, 3 or 5 cards from the 78-card Rider-Waite-Smith deck, choose whether to include reversals, and read plain-language meanings framed as reflection prompts. There's no account, and saved readings stay in your browser.

What it does

Tarot Card Gen does one job: it draws tarot cards and helps you read them. Choose a spread, either one card for a single focus, three for Past, Present and Possible direction, or five for a wider look at a situation. Decide whether to allow reversed cards, then press Draw. The browser shuffles all 78 card identities and picks the cards without repeats, and you reveal them one at a time or all together. Each card shows its name, orientation and position, with a short meaning underneath.

The page explains its own mechanics, which is a nice touch for a topic that often leans on mystery. Clicking to reveal a card uncovers a result that was already chosen, rather than picking a new one. The deck is the classic Rider-Waite-Smith set of 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana cards, and changing the spread size changes the layout, not the deck.

Learning the cards

The meanings are framed as reflection prompts. The homepage example shows how The Sun reads differently in a Present position than in a Challenge position. A directory covers quick meanings for all 78 cards, and The Fool, The Sun and Death have longer guides with comparisons and exercises. Guides cover how to choose between one, three and five cards and how reversals work. Once a spread is revealed you can hide the meanings and practise interpreting the cards yourself first.

The card faces are early Rider-Waite-Smith scans illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith, taken from Wikimedia Commons with a public-domain source record for each file. The creator writes under the pen name Rowan Vale and says this is an editorial identity, not a claim to professional credentials. The about page also states that AI-assisted drafting is part of how the meanings were written, while the cards themselves are picked by the browser.

Privacy and limits

There is no account and no server-side history. Saved readings stay in local storage, up to 20, and a shared link stores only the spread type, card identifiers and directions in the part of the URL after the # sign, never a question or journal note. The homepage does load a few directory badge images from other sites, which the privacy page names. The site says plainly that a card is not evidence of someone else's feelings or of a future event, which is the right frame for it.
