Project Note

A closer look at Online Asphalt Calculator

Online Asphalt Calculator estimates hot-mix asphalt tonnage from length and width, a known area, or several shapes with cutouts. It shows the formula, density and waste allowance behind each number, counts truckloads, and links to cost, driveway and quote-checking tools. It's free and runs in the browser.

What it does

The calculator answers a practical question before you call a supplier: how many tons of asphalt does this job need? Pick Quick size for a single rectangle, Known area if you already have the square footage, or Advanced to combine several shapes and subtract areas that won't be paved, such as islands or drains. Add the compacted thickness and you get net area, volume in cubic yards, net tons and a suggested order that includes a waste allowance.

The working is shown step by step. For the default 1,000 sq ft at 3 inches, the page shows 250 cubic feet times 145 lb per cubic foot, divided by 2,000, for 18.1 net tons, then adds 5% for an order of 19.0 tons and rounds up to two 18-ton truckloads. You can change the density, allowance and truck capacity, switch to metric, and print the summary or save it as a PDF.

Cost and quote tools

The result carries into a cost calculator where you add your local price per ton. Other pages work out cost per square foot, size a driveway, estimate asphalt millings, and run the calculation backwards, from tons available to the area they will cover. A quote checker helps compare contractor bids, and guides explain density, thickness, cost per ton and the difference between material-only and installed prices.

What to keep in mind

The site is careful to call every result a planning estimate. It covers the compacted asphalt layer only, not the base course or subgrade, and the default density and truck size are placeholders you should replace with figures from your plant and hauler. The about page says it doesn't claim contractor or engineering authority, and that pavement that lasts depends on soil, drainage, climate and traffic.

It is free with no account. Calculator inputs are saved in your browser so a refresh doesn't lose them, and a share link contains the project inputs, so anyone with it can see them. The privacy page says there are no advertising scripts and analytics come from a cookieless, self-hosted Plausible installation.
