Project Note

A closer look at MouseCheck

MouseCheck is a free online mouse test. It checks movement, main, secondary and middle buttons, side buttons and both wheel directions, applies a stated pass rule, and says what to try next when a signal never arrives. Separate pages test double-clicks, scrolling and polling rate.

What it does

MouseCheck is built for the moment a mouse starts misbehaving and you want evidence rather than a hunch. Press Start, then move, click and scroll inside the test area. The page counts what your browser actually receives: pointer movement, a hold-and-drag, a browser double-click, the main, secondary and middle buttons, the Back and Forward side buttons, and wheel events in both vertical directions plus horizontal.

What sets it apart from a page of flashing buttons is the result. MouseCheck applies a stated rule: movement, both main buttons and both wheel directions must reach the browser. It then tells you which signal is missing and what to try next. A checklist separates controls you haven't tried from ones you tried that produced nothing, so an untouched button never counts as a failure. A live strip shows the last ten events in order, and you can open the exact events and times.

Being honest about limits

The site is careful about what a browser can know. It says a zero on a side button does not diagnose the mouse, because some browsers act on Back or Forward before the page sees the event. The wheel's plus and minus signs describe browser events, not physical ticks. Pointer paths are browser previews, not sensor measurements. That framing makes the results more believable.

Other tests and guides

Separate pages handle a double-click test for mice that double-click on their own, a two-direction scroll wheel test, a polling rate test and a sensitivity converter for moving settings between games. Guides cover checking DPI, unexpected double-clicks, a jumping scroll wheel and ways to measure latency. A methodology page explains how each test decides its result.

There's no account, payment or upload, and the tests work in the page you have open. The about page names the developer as Daniel Reeves. One thing to note is that the privacy page still describes itself as a pre-deployment draft, saying production request logging had not been verified. Analytics come from a cookieless, self-hosted Plausible setup that, per that page, counts page views and never tool inputs.
