Project Note

A closer look at Cipher Cove

Free tools for turning text into Morse code, Wingdings, hieroglyphs, runes, braille and more, plus a cipher identifier and daily code-breaking games. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

What it does

Cipher Cove handles small code jobs: turning a name into Morse for a bracelet design, reading a line of Wingdings someone sent you, or working out what a string of strange characters in a puzzle is. The translators cover Morse code with sound you can play or download, Wingdings, Wingdings 2 and 3, Webdings, Egyptian hieroglyphs in an optional cartouche, three runic alphabets, Ugaritic cuneiform, the Minecraft enchanting table alphabet, braille, binary, IPA and the NATO phonetic alphabet. Most of them work both ways, and you can copy the result or save it as an image.

The Cipher Identifier is the handiest tool for puzzles. Paste a mystery message and it works out what it most likely is, then decodes it where it can. Caesar, Atbash and Vigenère decoders handle the classic cases, and a Morse audio decoder can read a recording or listen through your microphone.

For fun there's a daily cryptogram, a cipher of the day, a codeword puzzle, rebus puzzles, an online escape room called Escape the Cove, and a Morse code trainer. Streaks and progress are saved on your device.

Where the tables come from

The About page explains where each table comes from. Morse follows the ITU standard, with amateur-radio forms for the few characters the standard leaves out, clearly marked. Wingdings symbols come from the Unicode characters added for those fonts in 2014, so the site doesn't need or share Microsoft's font. The hieroglyph translator spells English by sound with the 24 one-consonant signs and says plainly that it isn't translating into ancient Egyptian. The site also warns that none of these codes are real encryption, so they shouldn't be used to protect anything private.

Privacy

Everything runs in the browser with no signup. The privacy policy, updated October 3, 2026, says the text you type and any Morse audio are never sent anywhere, and the microphone is only used when you press Listen. The site collects usage statistics through Google Analytics and Cloudflare Web Analytics. It's built by an independent developer in the United States and says it isn't affiliated with Microsoft, Mojang or any other company whose products it mentions.
